From the November/December 2019 problem of Acoustic Guitar widely known hymn, with lyrics normally sung in both English and Latin (and on occasion referred to by its Latin call, “Adeste Fideles”). Its phrases and melody are commonly attributed to an 18th-century English hymnist named John Francis Wade.
This solo-guitar association moves twice through the track’s easy verse/chorus form, set in the key of E predominant. The first verse functions contrapuntal motion with internal traces transferring below the melody. While the majority of the harmonies in both verses are diatonic chords in E most important, there also are numerous non-diatonic passing chords that provide extra color and texture to the melody.
